Welcome!

Here is our first post for our ACPS elementary art blog. How is everyone's first week of school going? Any thoughts? Ah-ha moments? Great ideas?

  1. First week at Meriwether is going fantastic. We have so many new faces and a lot of siblings this year. I took the idea from a blog about doing a "rainbow" of portraits and so far it's looking good. It's been a great way for kids to get to know eachother, use their eyes and have fun. It's prompted discussions on diversity, community and of course art. Thanks Molly for setting up this blog, I think it's great.

  2. Great job Molly! I'm so glad that we have this blog to share our art teaching experiences.

Well the first week at Greer is going very well! It's been so nice seeing the kids again and connecting with them about their summer experiences. I've been working really hard to create a kid centered studio environment, where the students feel inspired to create. The response from students has been great so far. One student walked in and said, "I love this room." :)

Students have made personalized portfolio's to house their artwork for the year. In the next few weeks I'd like to jump into self portraits as well! We definitely need to post pics. Andrew..I'd like to see how your rainbow of portraits is looking so far.

  3. This is great! I'm also doing the color spectrum of self portraits. Today we're ending with fifth graders doing their faces in purples and reds. It's very Andy Warhol.
I also had every staff member make a dot. These dots were all unique and told so much about every person. I put the dots on a bulletin board with a round mirror in the middle. All dots were connected to the mirrored dot. The bulletin board reads, "We're connecting the dots to you...." Thank you Peter Reynolds!

  4. I love it Kathleen! Do you mind if I try that out at Hollymead?
We are also doing the self portraits. I have each class doing all colors, so the portraits will be very mixed up when put up. Jocelyn recommended a template for the shape of the face, which was very helpful. It's been interesting to see what students add to their backgrounds.
I will figure out how to post pictures and let you all know how to add those too.

  5. Please "do da dot" at Hollymead. You'll love it.
What a great idea about doing all the colors. I'd like to do this again at the end of the year to see the progression.
